Personality Assessments to Maximize Organizational Efficiency

Personality can be defined as â€Å"the combination of stable physical and mental characteristics that give the individual his or her identity† (Kinicki Kreitner, 2006, p. 132). The dimensions that make up personality include thoughts, emotions and behavior patterns (Robbins Coulter, 2009). Personality has quantifiable aspects that remain stable throughout a person’s lifetime. The Myers-Brigg Type Indicator and the Big Five model are personality assessments that attempt to classify observable behavior. Some organizations use these assessments when hiring employees, placing them in an appropriate position, and promoting these individuals within the organization. Perceptive types are spontaneous and not lik ely to plan while judging types have routines and are planners (Robbins Coulter, 2009). When preferences for each dichotomy are combined 1 of 16 personality type combinations made of four letters is revealed. For instance, an ISTJ would be an introverted, sensing, thinking, judgmental type. Studies have shown that effective managers have commonalities in thinking and judging (Daft Marcic, 2009). More simply, they are able to make logical decisions quickly and in an organized manner. The Big Five model uses five broad dimensions to determine personality. Using this model, individuals are rated low, moderate, or high in relation to their propensity to exhibit the dimensions of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and openness to experience (Kinicki Kreitner, 2006). The characteristics of an individual who scores positively in the extraversion dimension are sociable, friendly, fun-loving, and talkative (John, 2009). Positive ratings in agreeableness r eflect that an individual is good natured, sympathetic, forgiving and courteous (John, 2009). Nursing Australian Diabetes Society

Question: Discuss about the Nursingfor Australian Diabetes Society. Answer: Introduction In Australia patients that have been diagnosed with diabetes are a proximately one million with over 130 000 patients diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2014). The more number of patients diagnosed with diabetes has placed Australia at number 7 with the highest prevalence in the world and 6th with the highest incident of type 1 diabetes. Of this population nearly 10-15 % diabetes patient undergoes surgical operation with high risk of complications, mortality rate and even long hospitalization. This, therefore, necessitates peri-operative management of these diabetes patients to reduce any risk associate with surgery. Peri-operative management include health care or management practices offered to diabetes patient before or after surgery operations (Australian Diabetes Society, 2014). The main focuses of this paper is on pre-operative and post-operative management of diabetes patients considering best nursing practices to reduce risk among pati ents. Background of the Research Question The most ultimate question that clearly emerges is that what are the best nursing practices in the managing patient with diabetes in the peri-operative settings? The above question remain unanswered since it is estimated that the rate of complication and mortality rate of patients with diabetes is 5 times greater among diabetic patients as compared to patients with other diseases who undergoes surgical operation. Some of the chronic complications cited include: microangiopathy, nephropathy and macroangiopathy. There is also surgical complication resulting from infection and vasculopathies. Studies show that infections from post operation complications account for 66% of complications (Frisch, A., Chandra, P., Smiley, D., et al. 2010). The greater percentage of post-operative infections commonly includes impairment of leukocyte function such as changed chemotaxis and phagocytytic activity. Patients with cardiac surgery often have myocardial ischemia. The research question therefore fo cuses pre- operative and post operative management of diabetic patient, the researcher is allocated to peri operative ward which is combination of both pre and post operative management (Varadhan, K. Neal KR, Dejong, H. et al. 2010). There are some suggested peri-operative management practices for diabetes patients to reduce risk of post-operative infections and complications. Control of glycaemia, pre-operative assessment and proper insulin use are some of preoperative management (Dhatariya K, Levy N, Kilvert A, et al. 2012). Firstly, pre-operative assessment is important where the nurse may obtain support from anaesthetist or a diabetes specialized nurse. Studies suggest that pre-operative assessment help identify the required care during surgery operations. Secondly, control of glycaemia has been seen as the best method to reduce the post surgery mortality rate among diabetes patients. The only alternative question that presents itself is that what is the safely level of glycaemia that need to be maintained? This question result from different conflicting data presented by different researchers. The second alternative question is that how tight the glycaemia should be controlled? This is because tight control of glycaemia also results in hypoglycaemia. Control of glycaemia continues to the post-operative management since there is need to return the blood glucose level back to the normal without risking the life of diabetic patient (Duncan, E. and Soltesz, E. et al. 2010). Clinical Practices for Peri-Operative Management According to Australian Diabetes Society (2014), one of the pre-operative management strategies is tight control of glyceamia. The matter of concern is the cost of tight glycemic control since its side effect has been severe hypoglycemia. There are minimal episodes of hypoglycemia in diabetes patients treated with analogue insulin though the cost is higher limiting majority of patients. According to International Diabetes Federation (IDF) (2013), the standard of care for diabetes includes balancing the hypoglycemia risk requires maintenance of glyceamia to 80-150 mg/dL. Therefore the main goal of pre-operative management is to achieve outcome similar to patient without diabetes. However, Varadhan, K. Neal KR, Dejong, H. et al. (2010), suggest that use control of glycemia that forms the main basis of pre-operative management requires cost effective considerations. The cost effective consideration of tight glycemic control is key for both efficacy and efficiency management of diabetes patients in pre-operative settings. Post operative management normally depends on the characteristic of diabetes, diabetes complications and methods of glycemia control. According to Dellinger P, Yanez D, and Farrohki E, et al. (2013), post operative management of diabetes patients focuses on insulin use and oral glucose lowering agents. Insulin administered to patients after surgery can be intermediate-acting, short-acting or long acting insulin. Short-acting insulin work best when give as pre-meal insulin since meal timing is also a matter of concern. Intravenous insulin is limited to patient in ICU since it requires continuous glucose monitoring (Humphrey, L and Snow V et al, 2011). Oral glucose lowering agents are also used to lower glucose level in post-operative management though it is limited to patient on such program in pre-operative management. Some of the glucose lowering agents includes sulfonylurea and insulin secretagogues. Glucose lowering agents reduce glucose level acutely in post operative diabetes pa tient management. The limitation of glucose lowering agents or medications is that these agents are limited to specific patients as compared to other post-operative management. Rationale for Peri-Operative Management Practices Studies indicate that poor peri-operative care of diabetes patients increases the risk of post-operative complications and infections. According to Dellinger P, Yanez D, and Farrohki E, et al. (2013), failure to control glycaemia for instance results in hyperglycaemia that is prone to cause complications among hospitalized diabetes patient after surgery. In addition post-operative control of hyperglycaemia results in low risk of complication among diabetes patients. Proper regulation of blood glucose at 4.4-6.1 mmol/L has proved to critically reduce morbidity and mortality among diabetes patients. In some patients, different blood glucose levels are required to prevent post-operative complication in different situations such as ICU. Type 1 diabetes patients are known to develop diabetic ketosis within a few hours when insulin is not administered or withdrawn especially at times of surgical operations. This implies that if insulin is not controlled then the more the lesser the insulin the higher the risk of post surgery complications (Frisch A, Chandra P, Smiley D, et al. 2010). Alternative Peri-Operative Practices There is need for multidisciplinary team for peri-operative management of diabetes patients to optimize the outcome. The multidisciplinary team incorporate good grasp of glucose-insulin complexities effect of anaesthesia and surgery provides optimized outcome (Duncan, E. and Soltesz, E. et al. 2010). On the other hand, there are still some people who are not open-minded and are not interested in learning about other cultures due to their very racist attitudes. A diverse learning environment with students or professors like these people can negatively affect some foreign students and students from minority groups, making them feel discriminated and unwelcome to such learning environment that may lessen their interest in studying or acquainting with students of different nationalities. Genetic engineering, altering the inherited characteristics of an organism in a predetermined way, by introducing into it a piece of the genetic material of another organism. Genetic engineering offers the hope of cures for many inherited diseases, once the problem of low efficiencies of effective transfer of genetic material is overcome. Another development has been the refinement of the technique called cloning, which produces large numbers of genetically identical individuals by transplanting whole cell nuclei. With other techniques scientists can isolate sections of DNA representing single genes, determine their nucleotide sequences, and reproduce them in the laboratory. This offers the possibility of creating entirely new genes with commercially or medically desirable properties. While the potential benefits of genetic engineering are considerable, so may be the potential dangers. For example, the introduction of cancer-causing genes into a common infectious organism, such as the influenza virus, could be hazardous. We have come to believe that all human beings are equal; but even more firmly, we are taught to believe each one of us is unique. Is that idea undercut by cloning? That is, if you can deliberately make any number of copies of an individual, is each one special? How special can clones feel, knowing they were replicated like smile buttons. Later, the arrival of organ transplants set people brooding about a world of clanking Frankensteins, welded together made from used parts. Already there are thousands of frozen embryos sitting in liquid nitrogen storage around the country. "Suppose somebody wanted to advertise cloned embryos by showing pictures of already born children like a product," says Prof. Ruth Macklin, of New York's Albert Einstein College of medicine, who specializes in human reproduction. Splitting an embryo mat seem a great technological leap, but in a world where embryos are already created in test tubes, it's a baby step. The current challenge in reproductive medicine is not to produce more embryos but to identify healthy ones and get them to grow in the womb. You’re Fired

Two words that people will go to extreme measures to never ever hear, pray, suck up to their boss and even†¦work hard. As frightening as these two words are, they play an essential role in the genius programme that is the Apprentice and honestly, those two words are the provider of my weekly supplement of entertainment. Have you realised just how downgraded television programmes have become? I have. The takeover of reality TV has completely lived up to new and changing consumer tastes but that doesn’t stop the show bosses of ITV from taking it too far. TV now is all about the fake tan, the drama of break ups and arguments. The Only Way is Essex, otherwise known as TOWIE (yes that’s the show that your children keep talking about) has officially taken over the meaning of television. The hair-tearing, teeth-wrenching-ly ridiculous programme means that I cannot turn on the TV without hearing â€Å"Well, jel.† Sorry, what? Thankfully, I have the Apprentice to keep me sane and just about alive. I’ve always found it most amusing to watch as the contestants introduce themselves â€Å"I’m better than unique; I’m naturally gifted in business,† claimed last year’s contestant Michael Copp who proved that he wasn’t so gifted in business after all when he was given the finger only 3 weeks into the arduous competition. The finger that I’m talking about, â€Å"the finger of dreaded doom† I think it should be called, is in fact Lord Sugar’s reputable gesture that does enough to send cold chills down my spine and leave contestants spluttering a combination of their tears and a part of their imperishable pride. Watching as they transform from the top dogs of the new business generation into helpless puppies that resort to pleading and begging in the hope that Lord Sugar will give them a second chance is simply hilarious; that is what I call pure entertai nment. The Apprentice is simply one of the best shows on TV at the moment which has managed to do the impossible in maintaining the qualities of good television; something which seems to have completely departed from our 40 inch television screens that now seem to lack purpose with the sheer amount of abhorrent and atrocious programmes that seem to occupy them. The Apprentice is the only programme around that is innovative and fresh; its concept is unique and actually meaningful – amazing, right? Unlike any of the other reality TV shows, the programme lives up to its purpose in showing us the truth and harsh reality behind business. It is just a touch of pure originality and excellence. It is becoming increasingly clear to see the importance that businesses have in modern society with successful businessmen having a tremendously important role in the world. The brilliance of this show is that is captures the truth about how business works in the real world and how you will really need more than just a dream to become successful. There aren’t many business gurus out there like Lord Sugar who will be willing to give people the opportunity to learn such essential skills in such an important sector of society. For the contestants to complete such gruelling tasks, gives them to chance to learn valuable skills that they will be able to manipulate in order to succeed. It’s not even just for the contestants; it’s an opportunity for people, especially young people sitting at home to learn about it too. I look forward to Season 9 and the next time that Lord Sugar sits down in the boarding room to announce â€Å"You’re fired†. Let the entertainment commence.

Satellite offices to help improve work-life balance TAN WEIZHEN – 09 MARCH SINGAPORE — To support the quest for better work-life balance, the Government will be carrying out various initiatives to support working from home, such as the introduction of satellite offices located nearer to homes. These Smart Work Centres will come with facilities and will be shared by employees of different companies, said Minister for Communications and Information Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, who also announced improvements to infrastructure for services like  [email  protected], during his ministry’s Committee of Supply debate yesterday.Noting that several Members of Parliament (MPs) had called for greater use of technology to boost productivity, Dr Yaacob said home-based work â€Å"can help Singaporeans better balance their work-life commitments and minimise travel during peak hours†. Singapore’s economy would also benefit from the increased labour force participation, w hile businesses could derive long-term cost savings in office space rental. The Infocomm Development Agency (IDA) is working with the National Library Board to pilot such centres at selected libraries.The Public Service will also be piloting this concept at several ministry buildings, including the Treasury, for use by public officers from participating agencies. The agency has also embarked on pilots for home-based work with six companies from the healthcare, education and telecommunications industries. Among them is home-nursing care provider Rasa Sayang, which allows nursing staff to access assignments and information on patients remotely.Meanwhile, the capacity and speed [email  protected]  will be ramped up and its login process simplified. Instead of having to repeatedly enter one’s login information, the improved network will be able to recognise registered users through the SIM cards in their phones. The IDA will also be revising the Code of Practice for Infocommu nication Facilities in Buildings to ensure buildings set aside adequate space to support quicker deployment of mobile services.Telcos have long had issues with building owners who either delayed the process or rejected such requests, leading to a slowdown in works to improve the mobile networks. Five MPs yesterday called for the greater use of ICT to help businesses, especially small and medium enterprises, to boost their productivity, as they undergo restructuring over the next few years.Mr Sitoh Yih Pin (Potong Pasir) said: â€Å"This can include a one-stop training centre to equip SME staff with the skills to use ICT, as well as getting SME owners to adopt ICT in their business in a holistic way, so as to overcome the current and near future manpower crunch. † Mr Low Thia Khiang (Aljunied GRC) added that internet speed is critical to home-based work initiatives, and questioned why speed is not part of the IDA’s quality standards. Since March 1967, South Coast has overcome various difficulties and challenges. In the beginning, it started as bean fields and as time went by it grew bigger. Since Segerstrom family had a bigger dream, they never stopped developing it. From 1986, South Coast began its largest expansion and grew on the streets and by the end of 1987; it was totally a unique place. Because of its expansion and various famous stores, South Coast improved its level from a local plaza to a standard national mall. In May 2007, it had a final reconstruction that resulted in re-opening of Bloomingdale’s. However, it is difficult to examine every store in the area. The South Coast Plaza has four architecture parts. Beginning with the west wing between Fairview Road and Bear Street is the furniture area that contains various famous furniture stores such as Marcy’s Home Furniture Store and Crate and Barrel Home Store. The largest part of this Plaza is situated in the middle surrounded by malls like Macy’s Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, and Sears. The east wing of the plaza is built for official businesses and on the north wing, there is a small part called the South Coast Plaza Village that hosts many restaurants for the visitors and locals. Currently, South Coast is the largest malls in the world, and its reputation and fame have attracted a number ranging from millions of people across the world every year. With this regard, it has become national scenic spots. When compared to Yellowstone National Park and many other places, it is a preferable area by the visitors from Asia. Almost a half of travel groups from China tend to go to the South Coast. It is nearly 14 hours flight from China Lax. Most of the visitors from China want to see the greatest mall on the first day since the place majorly attracts them because of its magic.
