Genetic engineering, altering the inherited characteristics of an organism in a predetermined way, by introducing into it a piece of the genetic material of another organism. Genetic engineering offers the hope of cures for many inherited diseases, once the problem of low efficiencies of effective transfer of genetic material is overcome. Another development has been the refinement of the technique called cloning, which produces large numbers of genetically identical individuals by transplanting whole cell nuclei. With other techniques scientists can isolate sections of DNA representing single genes, determine their nucleotide sequences, and reproduce them in the laboratory. This offers the possibility of creating entirely new genes with commercially or medically desirable properties. While the potential benefits of genetic engineering are considerable, so may be the potential dangers. For example, the introduction of cancer-causing genes into a common infectious organism, such as the influenza virus, could be hazardous. Two words that people will go to extreme measures to never ever hear, pray, suck up to their boss and evenâ⬠¦work hard. As frightening as these two words are, they play an essential role in the genius programme that is the Apprentice and honestly, those two words are the provider of my weekly supplement of entertainment. Have you realised just how downgraded television programmes have become? I have. The takeover of reality TV has completely lived up to new and changing consumer tastes but that doesnââ¬â¢t stop the show bosses of ITV from taking it too far. TV now is all about the fake tan, the drama of break ups and arguments. The Only Way is Essex, otherwise known as TOWIE (yes thatââ¬â¢s the show that your children keep talking about) has officially taken over the meaning of television. The hair-tearing, teeth-wrenching-ly ridiculous programme means that I cannot turn on the TV without hearing ââ¬Å"Well, jel.â⬠Sorry, what? Thankfully, I have the Apprentice to keep me sane and just about alive. Iââ¬â¢ve always found it most amusing to watch as the contestants introduce themselves ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m better than unique; Iââ¬â¢m naturally gifted in business,â⬠claimed last yearââ¬â¢s contestant Michael Copp who proved that he wasnââ¬â¢t so gifted in business after all when he was given the finger only 3 weeks into the arduous competition. The finger that Iââ¬â¢m talking about, ââ¬Å"the finger of dreaded doomâ⬠I think it should be called, is in fact Lord Sugarââ¬â¢s reputable gesture that does enough to send cold chills down my spine and leave contestants spluttering a combination of their tears and a part of their imperishable pride. Watching as they transform from the top dogs of the new business generation into helpless puppies that resort to pleading and begging in the hope that Lord Sugar will give them a second chance is simply hilarious; that is what I call pure entertai nment. The Apprentice is simply one of the best shows on TV at the moment which has managed to do the impossible in maintaining the qualities of good television; something which seems to have completely departed from our 40 inch television screens that now seem to lack purpose with the sheer amount of abhorrent and atrocious programmes that seem to occupy them. The Apprentice is the only programme around that is innovative and fresh; its concept is unique and actually meaningful ââ¬â amazing, right? Unlike any of the other reality TV shows, the programme lives up to its purpose in showing us the truth and harsh reality behind business. It is just a touch of pure originality and excellence. It is becoming increasingly clear to see the importance that businesses have in modern society with successful businessmen having a tremendously important role in the world. The brilliance of this show is that is captures the truth about how business works in the real world and how you will really need more than just a dream to become successful. There arenââ¬â¢t many business gurus out there like Lord Sugar who will be willing to give people the opportunity to learn such essential skills in such an important sector of society. For the contestants to complete such gruelling tasks, gives them to chance to learn valuable skills that they will be able to manipulate in order to succeed. Itââ¬â¢s not even just for the contestants; itââ¬â¢s an opportunity for people, especially young people sitting at home to learn about it too. I look forward to Season 9 and the next time that Lord Sugar sits down in the boarding room to announce ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re firedâ⬠. Let the entertainment commence.

These Smart Work Centres will come with facilities and will be shared by employees of different companies, said Minister for Communications and Information Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, who also announced improvements to infrastructure for services likeà [emailà protected], during his ministryââ¬â¢s Committee of Supply debate yesterday.Noting that several Members of Parliament (MPs) had called for greater use of technology to boost productivity, Dr Yaacob said home-based work ââ¬Å"can help Singaporeans better balance their work-life commitments and minimise travel during peak hoursâ⬠. Singaporeââ¬â¢s economy would also benefit from the increased labour force participation, w hile businesses could derive long-term cost savings in office space rental. The Infocomm Development Agency (IDA) is working with the National Library Board to pilot such centres at selected libraries.The Public Service will also be piloting this concept at several ministry buildings, including the Treasury, for use by public officers from participating agencies. The agency has also embarked on pilots for home-based work with six companies from the healthcare, education and telecommunications industries. Among them is home-nursing care provider Rasa Sayang, which allows nursing staff to access assignments and information on patients remotely.Meanwhile, the capacity and speed [emailà protected]à will be ramped up and its login process simplified. Instead of having to repeatedly enter oneââ¬â¢s login information, the improved network will be able to recognise registered users through the SIM cards in their phones. The IDA will also be revising the Code of Practice for Infocommu nication Facilities in Buildings to ensure buildings set aside adequate space to support quicker deployment of mobile services.Telcos have long had issues with building owners who either delayed the process or rejected such requests, leading to a slowdown in works to improve the mobile networks.
